Alternating Time (AT) & Direct Time (DT)
The two main currents of time in BWOT are Alternating Time (AT) and Direct Time (DT). Alternating Time governs Laredo/Salem/everywhere else. Time there stays “current” by whipping back and forth in tiny bits really fast, like a zipper, moving forward and also looping. Direct Time is constant but like a one-directional merry-go-round. The winding of DT requires occasional unwinding. For this reason stays on The Island are limited, and even when guests try to stay longer it becomes unbearable and can lead to physical and/or psychological damage. The necessity of winding and limited stays in DT zones changes following the implementation of Reverse Mode which has a built-in unwinding and allows for longer stays and for some permanent residency is even possible. Direct Time is an invention of The Mayor.
