In memory of recently fired props master Kevin Greeley, Hope Brady improvised an expression of her real-life grief during an Advil scene. That scene being the most powerful performance from Hope in weeks, was surprisingly aired even though Hope appeared to be mourning a never before seen or heard of character named Kevin.
In subsequent weeks, the writers scrambled to work Kevin, now given the last name Devereaux to avoid confusion with the real Kevin for whom he was named and tie him to one of the established families, posthumously into new scripts. When Abe remarked that Kevin and Jack were probably riding their motorcycles around in the clouds and giving each other high fives, fans started wondering who Kevin was. When Abigail claimed Jennifer would never love her as much as Kevin and promptly left her on the side of the road on their return from Ciara’s destination wedding, fans accused the writers of trying to pull one over on them. Following that Friday’s episode, the shows's head writer appeared offering an apology and full explanation of Kevin Deveraux’s unconventional inception. Fans were overwhelmingly positive in response to the show’s handling of Kevin’s character. Using #letKevinlive fans demanded Kevin be given a chance.
A few weeks later, in listing off people who had died that year, John included Kevin’s name. A month later a stranger wanders into Doug’s Place begging for a good meal. He seems familiar to Doug and others. Doug gives him a temporary job and starts calling him Slim. Hope and the Laredo PD can’t figure out who he is. Slim works with Dr. Marlena Evans to recover his memories. Marlena puts the puzzle together before he does and tells Slim/Kevin’s family so they can help him remember who he was. Through hypnosis she learns that Kevin’s body wasn’t consumed in the wildfire but was badly burnt. He was taken to a rehabilitation facility on The Island and having no records or memory started a new life as Dory Zees, but when caught fleeing another wildfire that summer, blacked out and awoke not remembering who he was. He took a boat and arrived Laredo not knowing why but repeatedly flashing on a memory of a town square just like the one he found in Laredo.
